Solunar Theory Explained: Why Moon Position Predicts the Bite

Solunar theory says fish (and game) feed most actively at predictable times tied to the moon's position — not its phase, but where it sits relative to your spot on Earth. It was popularized in 1926 by John Alden Knight, who compiled anglers' folklore into testable tables. A century later, every "best fishing times" app still runs on his framework.

The four daily windows

• Major periods (about 2 hours): when the moon is directly overhead (upper transit) or directly underfoot on the far side of the planet (lower transit). These happen roughly 12.5 hours apart.
• Minor periods (about 90 minutes): centered on moonrise and moonset.

Because the lunar day is about 24 hours and 50 minutes, all four windows drift roughly 50 minutes later each day — which is why a printed table for one week is useless the next, and why we compute the windows fresh for your coordinates.

When solunar windows matter most

1. Window overlaps sunrise or sunset. A major period stacked on dawn or dusk is the classic "magic hour" — two feeding triggers at once.
2. New or full moon. Solunar influence is considered strongest in the days around the new and full moon, when sun and moon pull in alignment.

Does it actually work?

Honestly: the science is mixed. Controlled studies have found lunar effects on some species (notably in tidal water, where the moon literally moves the water and the bait) and little effect on others. Tidal current is the best-documented mechanism — inshore, "solunar period" and "moving water" are nearly the same thing. In freshwater the evidence is thinner, but the windows cost you nothing: they're a scheduling tool, not a guarantee. If you can only fish two hours today, fishing the two hours with the best odds is free money.

How to use the windows

• Plan to be set up and fishing before the window opens, not driving to the ramp.
• Treat majors as the anchor of your trip and minors as bonus rounds.
